Sustainability

There is no question: we will only progress if we respect the ocean. A source of food, climate regulation, responsible for decarbonization, a means of transport and energy resources, it symbolizes the future of coming generations.

MOL is concerned about environmental issues and committed to the cocreation of sustainable projects with all stakeholders of interest.

Our medium- to long-term goals

2020
1. Started operating net zero emission vessels in the 2020s
2035
2. Reduce GHG emissions per production unit by approximately 45% by 2035 (compared to 2019*).
2050
3. Achieve net zero GHG emissions for the whole Group by 2050, with the concerted effort throughout the Group

Other Projects

We aim at environment-friendly navigation
ECO SAILING is an approach to saving fuel and reducing environmental impact. Together with R&D on environmental technologies, we are also using operational measures to reduce fuel consumption. Specifically, we 1) decelerate to the most economical navigation speeds, 2) take advantage of weather and sea condition forecasts, 3) take the optimum trim, 4) select optimum routes, 5) reduce vessels’ wetted surfaces, 6) optimize operation and maintenance of main engines, auxiliary equipment and other machinery, 7) develop energy efficient ship designs, and 8) equip vessels with Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCF).
We challenge the wind
MOL is taking part in the “Wind Challenger Project” (launched in 2009), a joint industry-academia research project led by The University of Tokyo. The project focuses on the use of advanced sails for the propulsion of merchant ships. The goal is to reduce vessels’ fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, maximizing the use of wind power. In January 2018, MOL and Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. Took over the project led by the university and launched an initiative to equip a vessel with sails.
Pioneering the decarbonization of marine transport and CCUs
In 2021, MOL signed the “Call to Action for Shipping Decarbonization”. The agreement, called for by the “Getting to Zero Coalition”, requires governments and the private sector to take concrete action to achieve the international decarbonization of marine transport.

This initiative, as well as the study carried out with Petronas on the transportation of liquefied CO2 required for the Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) value chain, are some of the steps MOL has taken, in tandem with its strategic sustainable commitment, as stated in Mol Group Environmental Vision 2.1.
We develop autonomous and safe navigations
Since 2019, MOL has been in a joint study to enhance collision avoidance algorithms and enable vessels’ autonomous navigation, named ‘Focus Brain’ Series Aspiring Development of Artificial Intelligence for Autonomous Navigation. Since 2018, MOL has wagered on augmented reality to make travels safer: a system provides real-time visual support to crewmembers during their watch-keeping and ship operations.

We are aboard our greatest challenge: preserving the oceans.

In addition to prominent issues such as marine environmental preservation, protection of biodiversity and the mitigation of air pollution, we aim to achieve “Net Zero GHG Emissions” by 2050, thus contributing to the sustainable development of people, society, and the planet.

In our MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.1 agenda, we have defined five initiatives to achieve the set medium- to long-term goals: adoption of alternative clean fuels, enhancement of energy-saving technologies, boost operating efficiency, building business models to enable net zero GHG emissions, and expanding low-carbon and decarbonization projects.
